WINNIPEG YOUTH SOCCER NEEDS YOU!
Do you love soccer? Do you want to help make it run better for children in Winnipeg?
The Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association is holding its annual general meeting on October 21, at which time the membership will be electing the following positions:
Vice-President (2 year term)
Director of Finance (2 year term)
Director of Outdoor (1 year term)
Director of Indoor (2 year term)
Director of Communications (2 year term)
Director-at-large (2 year term)
We have made great strides at WYSA in recent years, improving the level of service we offer our members, players, families and volunteers. We're proud of the improvements we've made, but we can still do more.
The WYSA board is made up of independent elected directors and appointed representatives from the five districts. While originally conceived as an operational board, in recent years the board has deliberately moved to a model where the board governs while paid staff administer the day to day operations of the league.
The board and organization are stable and have a solid financial foundation. We work closely with our member district clubs and community centres to ensure our youth can play the game at the level they choose. We are working hard to diversify our revenue through sponsorships, tournaments and as a service provider to other organizations (ie. we administer the indoor high school soccer league). That helps us keep a lid on player fees while expanding our capacity to improve our offerings.
WYSA administers recreational and competitive leagues for indoor and outdoor soccer, serving more than 10,000 players. We would like to grow the game and make it better. If you want that too and are interested in learning more about serving on the WYSA board, contact me confidentially at president@winnipegyouthsoccer.com
Yours sincerely,
Adam Dooley
WYSA President

A MESSAGE FROM THE WYSA PRESIDENT
Summer is nearly over and with it goes another outdoor soccer season. Things are busy at WYSA as the league prepares for September Cambrian Challenge Cup playoffs in many of its divisions and gets the ball rolling on a brand new 3 v 3 tournament at the end of August.
The last few years has been a time of change for youth soccer in Winnipeg. We've moved the younger age groups to smaller sized game with fewer players on smaller pitches. This encourages all players to get more touches on the ball and more time on the field. The focus is entirely on player development and enjoying the game, which is where it should be. Over time, we expect to see players raised in this new environment to display greater skills and abilities.
The improvement won't come just from players individually though. It has to come through our coaches. One of the goals we should all have for the game is to have the best possible coaches on our benches. Our players deserve coaches who have taken the time to learn and improve their skills through certification programs. Parents, players, community centres and clubs should expect that from coaches. Fortunately, our premier clubs have been doing a good job over the past few years of training more and more coaches to serve all levels of the game.
Here are a few other changes that are in the works at WYSA:
- We launched a player subsidy program in 2015 and pledged proceeds from our big summer Boston Pizza Players Tournament towards that program. Our goal is to see that program grow in the years ahead so we can help more kids play soccer in Winnipeg.
- We are taking concrete steps to broaden our revenue streams at WYSA so we're not solely dependent on player fees. To that end, we have signed or re-signed a number of corporate sponsorships - Boston Pizza, Cambrian Credit Union and CM Engrave - this year that will have a positive impact on our bottom line.
- New events such as the 3 v 3 tournament will also serve to add new revenues to the organization while also creating new opportunities for our youth to play the game in fun and dynamic ways.
- And we're in the midst of a major governance review which should help simplify and streamline our constitution while providing us a stronger foundation on which to grow the game in years to come.
A long time leader in our sport recently told me that WYSA is more stable and well administered now than it has been in many years. I agree, though there is much work to do. Still, it's worth celebrating milestones and I'd like to thank our board and office staff for all the hard work they've put in to bring about these positive changes.
We need more people like them helping grow the game. If you want soccer to be better in Winnipeg, then get out and volunteer. Be a coach, manager or convenor. Be a ref. Serve on a board. Do something to make the game better. Let's not settle for mediocrity here. Let's strive to have the best youth soccer league in the country. It's our collective responsibility to demand more of our league, our clubs and our community centres, but it's also our individual responsibility to pitch in and help.
Yours in soccer,
Adam Dooley
WYSA President

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Long Term Player Development (LTPD)?
WHAT IS LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT (LTPD)?
LTPD Is about putting the player first and offering age-appropriate opportunities for kids to enjoy the game of soccer. Making the game fun is key in teaching and coaching, so that players will continue in the game and may even coach or referee as they get older. More specifically, LTPD is a model of athlete development that parallels what doctors and psychologists have long used to better understand human development: as a series of distinct stages, which takes us from infancy through to adulthood. A person's abilities, behavious and emotions, as well as their understanding of the world around them, varies from stage to stage.
Similarly, experts in sport science have identified seven stages of development — each with its own physical and psychological characteristics —that form the basis for LTPD. When young soccer players are able to train and compete in an evironment that's appropriate to their stage of development, they not only perform at their best, they also have more fun.
| In other words, LTPD is designed to give players an optimal soccer experience at every stage by putting their needs front and center |
In order to accomplish this goal, the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) with the District Clubs and Manitoba Soccer Association (MSA) and Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) has introduced changes designed to encourage more playing time for every player, enhance skill development, improve coaching and generally make the game more fun to play! Whether you dream of playing for Canada's National Team or simply want to have fun with friends, taking the right approach to the game when children are young sets the stage for a lifetime of enjoyment! As well, new and better coach education is a critical element of the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), Manitoba Soccer Association (MSA) and Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association's (WYSA) new Long Term Player Development (LTPD) initiative.
For more information on LTPD, visit our homepage and view the menu options below LTPD!
